Are any of the Bears identical?
Although it would be simple to make each bear exactly the same as if it were a large scale company, I like to make things more personal. There are so many steps to the process and I could focus on those steps while making the bears but that really isn’t what goes through my mind. During the construction process I consider, ‘Does this person need a little more fluff in their life to help protect them from the hard times?’ I consider, what textures may cause them to revert to a more difficult time. ‘How can I make this one a little different? Do I use bold colors on one side of the quilt and pale flowers on the other to demonstrate the many things we go through in life?’ It would be so easy to mindlessly send these bears out without consideration for each person’s needs and experiences but this program helps open doors to those who may not understand what these men and women go through while they are in the service.
It takes a long time to decide what patterns to use for the quilt that I wrap the bear in only because the quilts signify a sense of warmth, like a hug that this person may need. I take the time to write a personal letter to each person to make sure they know that they are important in my life and I do care to pay attention to their feelings. The best part about having a small teddy bear is being able to bring it everywhere with you and it never stops listening to you and it never says it isn’t in the mood for a good long hug after a long day.
